Dr. Michael Koch

Michael is an Australian, New Zealand and European patent attorney, an Australian trade mark attorney and is on the register of Singapore patent agents. Michael joined the profession in 1997 as a trainee attorney in a major Australian IP firm during the completion of his PhD thesis in semiconductor technology, for which a US patent was later awarded. Incidentally, Michael assisted in the prosecution of the patent application related to his PhD thesis as part of his training.
Michael has acted for clients in various aspects of patent, trade mark and design law, including the preparation and prosecution of applications to registration and the enforcement and defence of registered rights. Michael has acted for a wide range of clients including MNCs, universities, SMEs and individual inventors.
In patents, Michael has worked extensively in the fields of photonics; telecommunication networks; semiconductor technology; computer technology including software, hardware, networks and AI; business systems and applied methods; and mechanical and electronics engineering.
Michael has acted for clients in the successful prosecution of IP applications to grant in all major jurisdictions (including Australia, ASEAN, Europe, Germany, USA, Japan, China, and Korea). Michael has also acted for clients in IP litigation matters (infringement, validity), revocation proceedings, hearings and appeals.
Michael has also assisted clients in various aspects of IP management, including harnessing invention disclosures, conducting in-house work-shops for R&D staff to develop IP awareness and understanding, development of in-house portfolio management tools, and advising on commercial activities relating to IP assets, including freedom-to-operate and scope of protection/validity advice.
Michael has also been a member of the Examination Committee for the Qualifying Examinations for Singapore Patent Agents since 2011, serving as a setter and marker of Paper A - drafting of patent specification.

Peter was first admitted to practice as a solicitor in New South Wales in 1993 and worked as a solicitor in the Intellectual Property Group of Freehills’ Sydney office where he became a partner in 2000.
Peter’s interest in intellectual property law goes back to his first job out of university – as a trade mark examiner at IP Australia. He then worked with a Sydney patent attorney firm for four years and during that time had carriage of a major piece of trade mark litigation (see: (1994) 120 ALR 495). Over the last 20 years, Peter has mostly lived and worked overseas, in Japan and in the Middle East, handling intellectual property issues for clients from all over the world.
In 2009, Peter published a major work which has become a standard reference: Intellectual Property Law and Practice of the United Arab Emirates, Oxford University Press, (2009), 848 pages.
